Hello Questers

WWDC 2024 unveiled numerous surprises, introducing several quality-of-life enhancements to iOS 18. Many of these features have been familiar to Android users for years, but iOS users were thrilled to see them. Here are the top Android-inspired features in iOS 18 that truly caught my attention!

Home screen Customisations

At WWDC 2024, Apple introduced several features in iOS 18 that Android users have enjoyed for years. One notable addition is home screen personalization. You can now place app icons anywhere on your iPhone's home screen, a simple yet incredibly useful feature that iOS had long neglected. This adds a new level of charm and customization to iOS that was previously missing.

T9 Dailer

It's surprising that Apple has delayed introducing such a basic feature for so long that it's now almost obsolete.T9 in the dialer, for instance, makes finding and calling contacts incredibly quick and easy.

For the longest time, iOS users had to manually search through contacts to find someone, which was quite annoying.Android users have had it for so long that they probably forgot it was even a feature.

Call Recording

It may seem amusing, but iOS users haven't had call recording for years, while Android users have enjoyed this feature all along. With iOS 18, Apple has finally introduced call recording, a super useful feature that every smartphone should have.

Previously, iOS users had to rely on the Voicemail feature for a workaround, which wasn't quite the same as true call recording.

Private Space

App locking and hiding have been available on various platforms for a while. While Google Pixel doesn't offer app locking, it recently introduced the Private Space feature to hide apps in Android 15. Skin like FuntouchOS,have own versions of app locking.

This feature is incredibly useful, allowing you to hand over your phone without worrying about what others might see. Information from hidden apps won't appear anywhere, including notifications. These hidden apps are moved to a hidden apps folder, accessible only via Face ID.

In my opinion, app locking and hiding are essential privacy and security features that every smartphone should have.

RCS Messaging

We saw this coming, didn’t we? For years, Apple has faced criticism for not supporting the RCS (Rich Communication Services) protocol in its Messages app. Without RCS, texting between iOS and Android users often resulted in shortened messages and heavily compressed image and video files, compromising their quality.

Now, with RCS support in iMessages, users can send longer messages and high-quality media without limits. Plus, these messages will be end-to-end encrypted.

However, texts and audio messages from Android devices will still appear green. Kudos to EU regulators for pushing Apple to implement this feature. It's a win-win in my book.

Game Mode

The Android vs. iOS debate has always included the question of which platform is better for gaming.Previously, iOS users only had a gaming-focused mode that silenced notifications.

However, iOS 18 introduces a dedicated Game Mode that pauses background activity and minimizes latency. It also reduces latency for wireless controllers.

Though it doesn't include touch sensitivity enhancements or other advanced features found in some Android skins especially in Funtouch OS.

Screen Mirroring

This might be a bit tricky to explain, but I’ll do my best. In 2015, Google decided to scrap screen mirroring with the Marshmallow update, deeming it unnecessary.

Photos Organiser

Android users don't seem impressed with the photo organizer feature now that they know Apple introduced it, even though it was already available in Android smartphones long before.

Conclusion

In my view, Apple is gradually embracing an "Androidification" trend with iOS.
