The gastropod shell is part of the body of a gastropod or snail, a kind of mollusc. The shell is an exoskeleton, which protects from predators, mechanical damage, and dehydration, but also serves for muscle attachment and calcium storage.
The shell is an integral part of the snail's body and being removed from it would kill the snail. However, if the shell is damaged but the snail is unharmed, the snail can repair the shell to be functional once again, if no longer beautiful.
They lay their small white eggs in a clump just under the surface of the soil in the late spring or summer. After a few weeks, the eggs hatch and the tiny baby snails emerge - already with their shells! At this stage, their shells are colourless, soft and delicate.
