Introduction And Origin

Well, remember spending your infinite hours on your tablet or your mobile devices back in 2012-2014 or even now on a endless runner game, well that's subway surfers for you. The first game which crossed 1 billion downloads on playstore was almost present on everyone's device back then and now, well the idea started way back in 2010 when 2 friends Jensen and Mulliner started a gaming company by the name of SYBO. Both friends educated from Denmark's famous animation studio - The Animation Workshop. Both won The Best Animation award in 2009 for a short film, where a character was drawing a graffiti on a train and the cop saw him doing it and the character started running in the subway. Doesn't it sound so much familiar 🫣. Yup that's the idea which makes  a Legendary game that became  history on our life.

Developement Of The Game

So, the game was made in collaboration with kiloo games which was an experienced studio of that time. The game was indeed based on the endless running genre, and was inspired from our beloved Temple Run because the initial short movie of the developers also suited that style and Temple Run was so successful. The game saw the Light on 24th May 2012 and became the most downloaded game of the decade. 

Fun Fact:- If you check the Google Trends now, Subway Surfers is still trending but Temple Run is almost dead.

Concept Of The Game

So, The game is based on a very simple idea where Jake, the main character of the game is drawing a graffiti on a train, where a Cop captures him doing it, and the Cop along with his dog follow him in the subway and Jake has to dodge various obstacles and just remain free from the Cop. Oh! Remember those powerups that helps in the way, be it Super Sneakers, The Jetpack and that Key that revives you everytime you are down. Well that's just a basic concept that made history.

The Rise

Well the initial phase was never good for the game, the critics didn't like it much and even gamers were not liking it. The critics were against the idea of another endless runner game that symbolises Temple Run and believed the market was saturated. But sooner things take U-turn when players find it interesting and it became The Game Of The Week on Apple App Store. The records were set and broken, just after 8 months of release the game crosssed 100 million+ downloads 😳 and crossed the freaking 1 Billion+ mark in 2018 🥶 and continued to shine when it became the most downloaded game of the entire world 😍

And it doesn't stop there currently it crosses 3 Billion+ downloads worldwide 

The Animation

Based on the success of the game, SYBO the developers, made an animation series that is available on their channel where Jake, Tricky and other characters follow their adventures. The series became so much popular and has 150 Million+ views. If you missed it, better to give it a check now.

The Hype and Survival

Well, there's always been a hype around the game that made it survive so long, like in comparison with Temple Run where gyro was implemented for turns, Subway Surfers made it accessible just through swiping and the game didn't have sharp turns unlike Temple Run.

The developers focused on pushing regular updates and new events like World Tour where new cities accross the Globe were accessible remember when Jake and Tricky visited Mumbai and Metros 😍

The Downfall

Yeah, this might be shocking for you because during whole thread we are talking how it survived The Downfall virus, but eventually the game's hype was going down between 2018-2021. There were several reasons like repetitive gameplay and one of the main reasons was tge change in Game Engine because it was difficult to push updates on the previous one and that introduced many bugs like past records were blown off and due to frustration many uninstalled the game. The Ads was another reason although it was better than other games where the Ads poped up during the gameplay and subway surfers just pushed them at the end but still it ruins the experience. The newer genre like Battle Royale games made it difficult for Subway Surfers to survive.

The Comeback

Well, when everyone thought like everyone else the game is dead it makes a magical turn in 2022 and did something that nobody imagined and gain popularity than it never gained in the first place. Speed The popular streamer started streaming Subway Surfers and his famous rage moment came that changed the fate of Subway Surfers. The videos were going viral, other creators started playing it again and so are the players making it's popularity all time high. Now The game is stable and past Temple Run in almost every aspect.
