Making calls on your phone is something most of us take for granted. But the technology behind those calls has been evolving alongside our mobile networks. Today, we'll be diving into the world of VoNR and VoLTE, two technologies that enable voice calls over cellular data networks.

The G in VoNR and VoLTE:

The "G" in both terms refers to the generation of cellular network they operate on. VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE, signifying it utilizes the 4G LTE network. VoNR, on the other hand, stands for Voice over New Radio, and it leverages the power of the latest 5G networks.

The Core of the Difference:

Both VoNR and VoLTE rely on the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) for call routing and functionality. However, the core network they use differs. VoLTE utilizes the Evolved Packet Core (EPC), the heart of 4G LTE networks. In contrast, VoNR takes advantage of the more advanced 5G core network, offering several advantages.

The 5G Advantage of VoNR:

  • Speed and Latency: 5G boasts significantly higher bandwidth and lower latency compared to 4G. This translates to faster call setup times and a smoother overall experience for VoNR calls.
  • Crystal Clear Calling: VoNR utilizes the next-generation Enhanced Voice Services (EVS) codec, delivering superior audio quality compared to the AMR-WB codec used in VoLTE.
  • Staying Connected: Unlike VoLTE, which might fall back to older 2G or 3G networks in areas with weak 4G coverage, VoNR strives to keep you connected entirely on the 5G network, ensuring a more consistent experience.

Beyond Speed: Considerations for VoNR

While VoNR offers a glimpse into the future of voice calls, it's important to consider some limitations.

  • Availability: 5G infrastructure is still under development in many regions. So, VoNR might not be available everywhere just yet.
  • Device Compatibility: Not all smartphones currently support VoNR. Make sure your phone is equipped for this new technology.

The Road Ahead

VoNR represents the future of voice calls, offering a significant leap in quality and performance. As 5G networks continue to expand, VoNR is poised to become the go-to standard for crystal-clear and uninterrupted calls. However, VoLTE remains a reliable workhorse for 4G networks, ensuring you can stay connected even in areas without 5G coverage.
