Gautam Gambhir was born on October 14, 1981, in Delhi, India. He began playing cricket at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks of domestic cricket. Gambhir made his first-class debut for Delhi in the 1999-2000 season. His performances in domestic cricket, especially in the Ranji Trophy, earned him a spot in the national team.




International Career


Gambhir made his ODI debut for India in 2003 against Bangladesh and his Test debut in 2004 against Australia. He was known for his aggressive batting style, which was instrumental in India's top order. Some of his career highlights include:




- 2007 ICC T20 World Cup : Gambhir played a pivotal role in India’s victory, scoring 75 runs in the final against Pakistan.


- 2008-2009 : This period marked the peak of his career. He was the top run-scorer in the 2008 Test series against Australia and was named the ICC Test Player of the Year in 2009.

Retirement and Post-Playing Career




Gambhir retired from all forms of cricket in December 2018. Post-retirement, he transitioned into various roles, including a commentator, politician (elected as a Member of Parliament for East Delhi in 2019), and mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants and KKR in the IPL.

Following Rahul Dravid's tenure, the BCCI began the search for a new head coach. Gambhir emerged as a strong candidate due to his extensive experience in Indian cricket, both as a player and a mentor. His work with KKR and the Lucknow Super Giants showcased his ability to manage and develop players effectively.


On July 9, 2024, Gambhir was officially appointed as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. His immediate responsibilities will include preparing the team for the Sri Lanka tour and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy
