Meet Anushka: India's Cutting-Edge Humanoid Robot

When people think of humanoid robots, they often think of sophisticated sci-fi creations or impressive robots like Sophia. With advances in AI and robotics, the prospect of such robots becoming a reality seems increasingly real.


Anushka, a humanoid robot developed by students and professors at the Krishna Institute of Engineering and Technology (KIET) in Ghaziabad, India, represents a major step toward that future. Unveiled in March 2024, Anushka is notable for being the first humanoid robot with autonomous movement developed in North India. Its design is also inspired by Vedic principles, which adds an interesting cultural dimension.

Anushka's features include a face with 3D printed features and silicone skin created by Madame Tussauds in India. Modeled after a late French princess and enhanced with AI, her facial design showcases a high level of detail and realism. The project was completed on a budget of just 2,000,000 rupees, a fraction of the typical 7–8 million rupees required for such robots. Some components were even sourced from a local landfill.


Technologically, Anushka uses a master-slave architecture where an i7 processor controls her movements through a network of microcontrollers and servo motors. It uses Natural language Processing (NLP) to understand and respond to voice comands. A microphone discreetly placed behind her necklace picks up these commands, which are processed by a Python-based program. Anushka then gets information from a vast database of 500 terabytes obtained from OpenAI.

Additionally, Anushka is equipped with computer vision for facial recognition, which allows her to identify people up to 10 meters away, although she may need several interactions to remember them accurately.


While Anushka is not self-aware as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) remains a future goal. Demonstrates advanced abilities through listening, seeing, communicating and moving. Her lifelike features and lifelike movements, along with the technical innovations behind her design, reflect significant advances in the field of robotics.
