TL;DR

  1. WhatsApp will soon release a big update for Android users
  2. WhatsApp will give you an option to replace your phone number with a username
  3. People will also be able to add a PIN to their account which will stop anyone from texting them

WhatsApp's Major Privacy Update: Username and PIN

WhatsApp, a widely popular messaging app in India, is set to receive a significant privacy update. Known for its user-friendly interface and lack of ads, WhatsApp has maintained a strong user base. This new update introduces the Username and PIN feature, allowing users to replace their phone numbers with unique usernames.

This feature offers three privacy options:

  1. Username: Users can opt to be identified solely by their chosen username.
  2. Phone number: Users can continue to share their phone numbers with contacts.

It's important to note that this update doesn't affect existing contacts. Those who already have your number will still see your contact details. However, new users will only see your username in your profile.

This update marks a significant step towards enhancing user privacy and control over personal information on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp's upcoming update introduces a third privacy option: "Username with (a four-digit) PIN." This setting allows users to restrict contact to only those who have their unique PIN. While this feature offers a significant boost to privacy, there's a known loophole that Meta needs to address.

Existing contacts can still reach out to users who have enabled the PIN feature, despite the intention to limit contact to those with the correct PIN.

According to the report, this feature is designed to provide users with greater control over who can initiate contact through their username. It's currently available for testing in the WhatsApp beta version for Android 2.24.18.2. Stable Android users can expect to access this feature in a future update.
