Avani Lekhara, India's star para shooter, made history at the Paris 2024 Paralympics by winning her second gold medal. The 22-year-old successfully defended her title in the women's 10m air rifle standing SH1 event, setting a new Paralympic record with a score of 249.7.

Avani's performance shattered the previous record of 249.6, which she herself set three years ago at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Her victory in Paris makes her the first Indian woman to win two gold medals at the Paralympic Games.

The silver medal in the event went to Lee Yunri of South Korea, who scored 246.8, while India's Mona Agarwal claimed the bronze with a score of 228.7. This achievement marked India's first-ever double podium finish in the same event at the Paralympics.

"It's an incredible feeling to win another gold for my country and to defend my title," Avani said after her victory. "Having Mona on the podium with me is truly motivating."

Avani is only the second Indian athlete, after javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia, to win two gold medals at the Paralympics. Her triumph also brings India's total gold medal count to 10 in the history of the Games.

In the SH1 rifle shooting category, athletes have impairments in their legs, such as amputation or paraplegia, but can support the weight of the rifle themselves. Avani's next challenges at the Paris 2024 Paralympics include the women's 50m rifle 3 positions SH1 and the mixed 10m air rifle prone SH1 events.
