About Onam

Onam is a major annual festival celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala, typically during the Malayalam month of Chingam (August-September). It is a harvest festival and marks the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali, under whose reign Kerala is believed to have prospered. The festival lasts for ten days, with Thiruvonam being the most important day.

1.  Atham (Day 1) : Marks the start of the Onam festivities. People begin preparing the Pookalam (floral designs).

2. Chithira (Day 2) : The Pookalam grows larger as more flowers are added, and homes are cleaned.

3.  Chodhi (Day 3) : New clothes, called Onakkodi, are bought.

4.  Vishakam (Day 4) : Considered an auspicious day to start preparing for the grand Onam feast.

5.  Anizham (Day 5) : Vallamkali (Snake Boat Races) begin.

6.  Thriketa (Day 6) : People visit their ancestral homes, and families get together.

7.  Moolam (Day 7) : Temples start hosting special prayers and cultural events.

8.  Pooradam (Day 8) : Clay idols representing King Mahabali and Vamana are installed in homes.

9.  Uthradam (Day 9) : Also known as the first Onam, it is considered one of the most important days when people prepare for the grand day.

10. Thiruvonam (Day 10) : The main day of Onam. It includes the grand feast (Onam Sadhya), final Pookalam designs, and cultural celebrations.


These days signify the return of King Mahabali, with Thiruvonam being the peak of the celebration.

Onam Sadhya is the traditional vegetarian feast served during Onam, and it is a highlight of the festival. The meal is typically served on a banana leaf, and it consists of a wide variety of dishes, each with its own unique flavors and significance. A traditional Sadhya can have over 20 to 30 dishes.


Some of the key components of Onam Sadhya include:


1. Rice : The main dish, usually served with various curries.

2. Parippu : A lentil curry made with moong dal and served with ghee.

3. Sambar : A spicy and tangy lentil-based vegetable stew.

4. Rasam : A thin, tangy soup made from tamarind, tomatoes, and spices.

5. Avial : A mixed vegetable curry with coconut and yogurt.

6. Kootu Curry : A thick curry made with vegetables and black chickpeas.

7.  Olan : A mild dish made with white pumpkin, cowpeas, and coconut milk.

8. Kalan : A thick yogurt-based curry with yam and plantain.

9. Pachadi : A sweet or sour dish made from pineapple, cucumber, or pumpkin.

10. Inji Puli : A tangy and spicy chutney made from ginger, tamarind, and jaggery.

11.  Thoran : A stir-fried dish made with vegetables like cabbage or beans, mixed with grated coconut.

12. Pappadam : Crisp fried lentil wafers.

13.  Pickles : Different varieties of pickles like mango, lime, etc.

14.  Banana Chips : Crispy, deep-fried banana slices.

15.  Payasam : A sweet pudding, typically made with rice, milk, or coconut milk, and jaggery. Some varieties include Ada Pradhaman, Palada Payasam, or Parippu Payasam.


The combination of all these dishes makes the Onam Sadhya a feast of flavors, ranging from sweet and sour to spicy and tangy, celebrating the rich culinary tradition of Kerala.
