On September 29, 2024, SpaceX launched the Crew-9 mission to bring NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore back from the International Space Station (ISS). The two astronauts were stranded after Boeing’s Starliner experienced safety issues earlier in the month.
This mission includes only two astronauts instead of the usual four, ensuring seats for Williams and Wilmore on their return trip. Despite the challenges, SpaceX successfully executed the mission, reaffirming its reliability in space rescue operations.
NASA has opted for SpaceX over Boeing due to technical problems with Boeing’s Starliner, including failed thrusters and helium leaks. Williams and Wilmore will remain aboard the ISS until February 2024 before heading back to Earth.
