Google’s flagship ‘Google For India’ event saw how the tech giant is infusing AI in its latest offerings and how it is forging deeper collaborations with the Indian tech ecosystem. The event focused on how AI is becoming more useful in real life scenarios and unveiled the “AI Opportunity Agenda for India” whitepaper, which focuses on investing in infrastructure, building an AI-ready workforce and promoting inclusive adoption.


The event also saw Google introducing a bunch of new AI powered features and showcasing how the technology can be improved and applied in various sectors like education, healthcare and others.


Gemini now powers more Google products

At its annual event, Google announced that Gemini is now available in Hindi, with support for eight more Indian languages – Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil and Urdu coming soon. The tech giant also announced its AI Overviews feature, which currently supports English and Hindi will soon be giving AI generated answers for search queries in Bengali, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil in the coming weeks.


Google Lens, the company’s free app that uses image recognition to understand what you are looking at will be able to analyse videos as well. In the near future, users will be able to use Lens to search with a video and even ask questions about things that are in motion.It will use a custom Gemini model and offer answers with AI Overview. The functionality will be available for those who are enrolled in the “AI Overviews and more” experiment.


As for Google Maps, one of the most popular navigation services in India is getting a huge upgrade. Using Gemini, Google Maps will now show summaries of places and reviews of places starting later this month. Google Maps is adding the ability to recognise images to help people search for places and answer specific search queries “themed birthday cakes” or “unique picnic spots.” The tech giant says it is also introducing two new weather related alerts, which will warn you of low visibility areas due to fog and flooded roads.

Google Merchant Center upgrades


For merchants, Google unveiled a bunch of new features like a new “Image to Video Animation” tool in the Product Studio in Google Merchant Center that transforms images into catchy videos. Restaurant owners can now use their Google Business Profile and convert menu photos into formatted online menus. The tech giant is also adding a way to showcase deals from social media posts and popular food aggregators like Zomato, Swiggy, EazyDiner and MagicPin.


To connect with customers, Google Merchant Center now lets you chat via SMS or WhatsApp. This feature will initially be limited to a select set of merchants, but will eventually roll out to everyone.


Google Pay

In partnership with Muthoot Finance, Google Pay will now offer Gold-backed secured loans with “affordable interest rates and flexible usage options. The app is also getting a Gemini powered support guide that can now answer questions about credit products so users can make an informed choice.


Google Play Protect

Google Play Protect is also getting a bunch of upgrades to combat online scams and malware. The tech giant says the feature “will analyze and automatically block the installation of apps” that you have downloaded from the internet, messaging app, or file manager. The company says the initiative has already proven to be successful and has blocked more than 9,00,000 installations in Singapore alone.


Google AI Skills House

Google also introduced a new learning programme called AI Skills House that offers courses for students, educators, developers, job seekers and civil officials. Some of these courses offered include Introduction to Generative AI, Introduction to Responsible AI and Introduction to Large Language Models and will be available for free on YouTube and Google Cloud Skills Boost platform in English and Hindi, will support for seven more Indian languages coming soon.


AI in healthcare

Google’s health research team is helping the Government of India to help bridge the gap between patients and healthcare providers and making it possible to access NHA issued ABHA health IDs on the Google Wallet app. The company also announced that it is working in collaboration with Apollo to build more than 800 health knowledge panels on Search in both English and Hindi.
