Meta Quest PTC v71 improves keyboard compatibility with real-time passthrough view of the user's real keyboard.
The new feature allows the headset to track any keyboard in a home, giving flexibility for typing on various keyboards.
The functionality is only available via the PTC for testing and may not become a full-fledged feature, pending user feedback.
latest Public Test Channel has introduced a feature that could make it easier to use any keyboard. While the Meta Quest VR headset currently allows the use of connected keyboards, this new version could make the process much easier and open up a wider variety of options for users.
The Meta Quest VR headset includes passthrough cameras that allow users to see the world around them. This functionality allows the Meta Quest to deploy certain apps and display cut-outs of the real world while a user is in their virtual home. However, using a keyboard has had some drawbacks, which may be alleviated by this PTC update.

This functionality allows the Meta Quest to deploy certain apps and display cut-outs of the real world while a user is in their virtual home. However, using a keyboard has had some drawbacks, which may be alleviated by this PTC update.
Meta Quest has introduced the PTC v71, which Twitter user FouzReda noticed changed the way keyboards are recognized by the headset. Normally, when a user is in their virtual home, they can connect a keyboard via Bluetooth to the headset. The VR headset responds by showing a model of the keyboard on-screen, aligned to where it is in the real world, so that users can theoretically reach out and use it without a problem. However, this feature only works with select keyboards. PTC v71 replaces the 3D model method and instead creates a cutout where the keyboard is located in real life, allowing a user to literally see through the virtual home into the real world. This also allows the user to see their real hands so it may make typing feel more natural.
In addition to working with all keyboards, this new function also allows users to utilize keyboards that aren't connected to their headsets. The headset will instead track any keyboard it sees, displaying it as a white rectangular outline until a user gets close enough to it, at which point it's replaced by a real-time passthrough view of the user's real keyboard. In theory, this means that any keyboard in a home can work with the headset, and users should be able to do things like type on laptop keyboards.
While the Meta Quest feature sounds promising, it's currently only available via the PTC, and isn't guaranteed to launch as a full-fledged feature. The Public Test Channel is designed to test out features with real users to see if they're working properly and if they're well received before moving to the official, stable version. However, not every feature makes the cut. It remains to be seen if Meta will implement this function for normal users.
