Spam calls are a common annoyance, often interrupting daily activities and posing risks of potential scams. Here’s a step-by-step guide to blocking these unwanted calls on Android phones.
Spam calls, particularly those for marketing or promotions, can frequently interrupt daily routines and may even lead to scams. These calls may come from telemarketers, robocallers, or scammers. While they are irritating, simply ignoring them or silencing your phone isn’t practical. Similarly, leaving DND mode on could make you miss important calls, such as deliveries. So, what’s the solution?
Here’s a guide on blocking spam calls on Android:
Registering with the National Customer Preference Register (NCPR), formerly the National Do Not Call Registry (NDNC), is an effective way to opt-out of telemarketing calls.
To activate DND:
- Open your SMS app, type "START," and send it to 1909.
- You’ll receive a list of categories, like Banking and Hospitality, each with a unique code.
- Reply with the relevant code for the categories you wish to block.
- After confirmation, DND activates within 24 hours, blocking unsolicited commercial calls without affecting essential alerts from banks or service providers.
Most providers allow direct DND activation:
- Jio: Open the MyJio app > Settings > Service settings > Do not disturb. Select the categories to block.
- Airtel: Visit [airtel.in/airtel-dnd](airtel.in/airtel-dnd), enter your number and OTP, then choose categories to block.
- Vi (Vodafone Idea)**: Visit [discover.vodafone.in/dnd](discover.vodafone.in/dnd), enter your details, and select categories.
- BSNL: Send "start dnd" to 1909 from your BSNL number, then choose categories.
You can manually block individual numbers:
- Open the Phone app, go to call history.
- Tap and hold the spam contact, then choose "Block" or "Report."
- This is effective but limited, as spam numbers often change.
Android offers an option to filter unknown or suspected spam calls:
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the three dots (menu) icon, go to Settings.
- Select "Caller ID & Spam," then toggle on "Filter spam calls" and "See caller & spam ID."
This setting reduces interruptions from unknown numbers not in your contacts.
