Asom Divas, also known as Sukapha Divas, is a celebration of the founding of the Ahom kingdom and the unification of Assam by Chaolung Sukapha. It marks the arrival of Sukapha in Namrup, Assam, in December 1228, after a 13-year journey from the Tai state of Mong Mao in present-day Yunnan, China. This historic migration laid the foundation for medieval Assam, which resisted great powers like the Mughals and thrived for six centuries.
Sukapha is revered for fostering unity among diverse ethnic groups and building "Bor Asom" (greater Assam). His legacy symbolizes courage, leadership, and harmony. The day is celebrated with traditional dances like Bihu and Bagurumba, music, award ceremonies, and processions, showcasing Assam’s rich culture and history.
Key moments include Assam gaining statehood in 1951, the shift of its capital to Dispur in 1972, and the first official celebration of Asom Divas in 1996. The event honors Sukapha's unifying vision, reminding us of the importance of harmony and cultural pride.
