Sony is aiming to revolutionize gaming immersion by introducing a concept that incorporates scent technology, potentially allowing players to smell their in-game experiences.
Unveiled at CES 2025, Sony’s “future immersive entertainment” concept showcased a two-minute video featuring scenes from 'The Last of Us' enhanced by engaging audio, haptics, and scent.
The concept proposes an immersive setup that doesn’t rely on traditional VR headsets. Instead, it envisions an environment where players can feel fully engaged with the atmosphere of their games. However, the ambitious idea raises practical concerns, such as the need for a large, customizable space to replicate the intended effects.
Sony’s history of blending cutting-edge technology with gaming innovation positions the company as a potential leader in this space. However, skepticism surrounds whether such technology is feasible in the near future. Gaming enthusiasts recall similar attempts in the past, such as the scratch-and-sniff cards for the 1980s text adventure ‘Leather Goddesses of Phobos,’ which never became mainstream.
While Sony’s immersive entertainment concept sparks curiosity, critics question its practicality amidst industry challenges, including developer layoffs and a lack of advancements in VR gaming for platforms like Quest 3. Still, the possibility of adding scents to gaming opens up new avenues for sensory engagement.
Whether smell-o-vision will become a staple of gaming or remain a futuristic dream is uncertain. For now, it reflects Sony’s ambition to push boundaries in gaming innovation.
The demo was made using gameplay pulled from The Last of Us but obviously adapted to work for the Future Immersive Entertainment Concept, so unfortunately for fans is not a further look into the beloved world.
Even if it was, of course, this technology is still years away and presumably incredibly expensive, so there are myriad limitations to actually getting it into the public's hands (or getting the public into it). Sony may showcase it with other franchises in the future too, such as God of War, Horizon, and so on.
