Today, there is an AI chatbot for nearly everything you wish to do. And more, with personalised use cases, are coming up by the day. In 2023, when the world was marvelling at creations like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini chatbots, Elon Musk-owned AI startup XAI introduced its own chatbot—Grok AI.
At the time of its launch, Grok AI had access limited to premium subscribers. However, in December 2024, xAI made the chatbot available to all free users on X. Ever since, all users, including those without an active subscription, have been able to access the chatbot to generate text and images and use it as a search engine. However, there is a daily usage limit.
In this article, we will explore how to use Grok AI and make the most of free-to-use commercial AI tools.
Grok is essentially an AI-powered chatbot that can respond to text prompts, hold conversations, and even generate images. It is currently available on X and also has a standalone iOS app. It can also be accessed via x.com on desktop. The app has been advertised as a chatbot with a sense of humour. Ever since the launch of Grok-1 in November 2023, there have been numerous iterations. The latest versions are Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini, which were launched in August 2024. xAI introduced image generation and enhanced reasoning with Grok-2. The users of the free tier on X, as of now, only get 10 text prompts every two hours and up to three image generations at once.
Grok AI has an interface similar to other LLMs. There is an input box, “Ask Anything,” where you can push prompts as well as upload images or documents that you need to summarise. For instance, we uploaded a research paper that appeared on Nature Medicine with the prompt, ‘What is this document?’ Within a minute the chatbot responded by saying that it was an article that appeared in the science journal, its title and publication details, study overview, key findings, methods used, statistical analysis, implications, etc. One can also ask questions of the chatbot about the document uploaded, such as for a summary or visual representation of the text. You can attach documents to get reports, analysis, and more.
Real-time search
Grok AI also functions as an avenue for real-time search. The chatbot has access to real-time information on X, which in itself is a huge database. While earlier Twitter used to be among the top sources for news as it delivered top developments in lightning speed, with Grok AI, you can get all the top headlines in one place.
We looked for “top headlines,” and the app responded with the same from various sources. On the top part of the results, the chatbot showed how many articles and web pages it referred to to bring the results. Similarly, for shoppers, they can look up a wide range of products and services using the chatbot. While it can be used as a search engine, we advise you to cross-check the output, as the chatbot is prone to offering incomplete information. When it comes to search, Grok AI can be a reservoir of information, considering that Twitter has been active since 2006. Apart from billions of tweets, there is a vast trove of information from academics, experts, public figures, and news. This sets Grok AI apart from its peers.
Grok AI offers two distinct modes: a regular mode and a fun mode. Regular mode, which is set by default, is meant for users who are looking for straightforward information and factual responses. This mode offers answers sans the added layer of humour. On the other hand, the fun mode, which was added in March 2024 and is, according to Elon Musk, “unhinged fun mode.” Fun mode adds a dash of humour and sarcasm to the chatbot. While the fun mode can be an entertaining conversationalist, the regular mode can be used to brainstorm ideas—from business to project management.
Among the free image AI generators, Grok can create some of the most hyperrealistic images. Grok is capable of creating unfiltered images owing to its integration with FLUX—an open-source AI image generator. It needs to be noted that unlike ChatGPT and DALL-E, Grok can create images with visuals of real people, such as celebrities and political figures, and it can also generate sensitive images. However, there are some limitations on generating images that may lead to copyright or trademark infringement. We tried creating images of various celebrities such as Shah Rukh Khan, Jennifer Lawrence, Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, etc. The chatbot created images that were lifelike with precise details.
Now that the Grok AI is also accessible to free users, people creating obscene images of random celebrities was a concern. During our use we generated prompts with words like ‘naked,’ ‘nude,’ ‘porn,’ etc. In its output, the chatbot gave a glimpse of the guardrails that it has in place to tackle such requests. For prompts with terms related to nudity, the chatbot generated images that were very safe for work. In short, no nude images were generated by Grok AI. The results were uniform for both free-tier and subscriptions and across Android, iOS, and the web.
It is noted that, much like ChatGPT, Grok struggles generating images with text. We asked the chatbot to create a birthday party invite using the text in the prompt; the output, although visually appealing, the text appeared garbled. However, the chatbot can be a great tool to make birthday greeting cards or simple good morning messages, as with limited text it works fine.
Grok can be a great way to fact-check tweets. It can be a great tool to summarise news along with referencing texts, giving it an edge over ChatGPT and Gemini. This is possible as Grok has access to X’s data, which also gives it accuracy and traceability. One can simply paste the URL to a Tweet and ask the chatbot to do a fact check. It will show a detailed response about the tweet.
Grok AI can be used as a travel planner. One can simply ask the chatbot to create a travel itinerary for them, and the chatbot will create a detailed itinerary. Besides, one will also get the links to the source of the information.
With Grok, the user has full control over their information. For those concerned with their privacy, they can stop their posts from being used to train Grok AI. One simply needs to go to Settings and Privacy on their X profile and then go to Privacy and Safety to find Data Sharing and Personalization. Later, select Grok to opt out. The account can also be made private to prevent posts from being used for Grok training.
