In a surprising move, Airbus has officially grounded its Beluga Transport airline division, just over a year after its launch. This ambitious venture was designed to repurpose the iconic A300-600ST Beluga aircraft for commercial cargo operations, handling oversized shipments like satellites, engines, and helicopters.
Launched with high hopes and securing its French air operator's certificate in November 2023, the airline aimed to tap into the niche market of specialized cargo transport. However, Airbus has now suspended all flights and plans to shut down the division entirely. While no specific reason has been disclosed, Airbus emphasized the complexity of the closure process, which is still in its early stages.
The BelugaST, famous for its unique whale-like design, was once the backbone of Airbus’s internal logistics, ferrying massive aircraft parts. It was succeeded by the larger and more efficient A330-743L BelugaXL. Despite retiring from internal operations, the BelugaST fleet was expected to shine in the commercial charter market, with 10–20 years of flying life left. Could these aircraft still make a comeback in a new role?
The Beluga’s distinctive appearance has made it a fan favorite in the aviation world. How many of you have been lucky enough to see this incredible aircraft in action? Share your experiences!
With the BelugaXL continuing to dominate aerospace logistics, this closure leaves us with questions. Was this an inevitable move, or did Airbus miss an opportunity to revolutionize cargo transport further?
