Do you really know the difference between hoisting flag on Independence day & Republic day ....

The national flag of India is a symbol of unity and pride. In India, this flag is used during two major national events: Independence Day and Republic Day. Both the events use the flag, but the manner in which it is displayed- - the hoisting on Independence Day and the unfurling on Republic Day- - have different meanings and historical backgrounds.

As India is set to celebrate its 76th Republic Day on January 26, 2025, let’s delve and discuss in depth the meaning and significance of why the Tricolour hoisted on Independence day but unfurled on Republic Day.

Independence Day (August 15) - Flag Hoisting🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳

Context:

On Independence Day, the flag is hoisted to mark the country's freedom from colonial rule in 1947.

Symbolism:

The flagpole starts empty, symbolizing India raising its flag as a newly independent nation for the first time.

Ceremony:

The Prime Minister hoists the flag at the Red Fort in New Delhi, pulling it up from the bottom of the pole to its top. This act represents India's emergence as a free nation.

Republic Day (January 26) - Flag Unfurling🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳

Context:

Republic Day commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950, making India a sovereign republic.

Symbolism:

By Republic Day, India is already an established republic, so the flag is pre-mounted on the pole and is unfurled instead of hoisted.

Ceremony:

The President of India, being the constitutional head of state, unfurls the flag. The flag is tied at the top of the pole and is simply released.

As we approach Republic Day in 2025 on January 26, it's a moment to reflect on these traditions that honor both our past struggles for independence and our ongoing journey as a sovereign democratic republic.
