Video game hardware sales drop by 45%, hitting lowest January total since 2020.

Mat Piscatella, executive director and industry analyst at Circana, formerly known as NPD, shared that video game hardware sales are slowing down by nearly half their usual rate.

Overall, this drop in spending is the lowest January total in gaming hardware since 2020's $131 million.


Despite the drop in hardware sales that year, software sales had hit a 10-year peak, largely attributed to the extra time that people had on their hands during the global pandemic.

In response to this news, some gamers have shared the sentiment that as long as the hobby remains too expensive for their comfort, sales will continue to fall.

Despite the somewhat bleak outlook that could be reflected by these recent Circana statistics, it's possible that gamers will see a drastic change in hardware sales sometime soon, as the Nintendo Switch 2 appears to be set for a 2025 release.
