Robots assisting you with domestic chores may not be a distant dream after all. Norway-based robotics company 1X has introduced a new robot that can perform a wide range of tasks. Named NEO Gamma, the humanoid robot is aimed at assisting with home tasks and comes with fluid and natural movements. In the promotional clip shared by the company, the robot can be seen in a nylon knit suit, serving coffee, helping hang a painting, and walking around with a laundry basket.
Reportedly, the design of the bipedal robot draws inspiration from everyday domestic life. It comes equipped with advanced visual and language models for seamless interaction. The company, unlike many of its peers, has prioritised domestic space over industrial settings. 1X believes that home space is where the future of robotics lies. While there are challenges related to the safety needs of household environments, the company is bullish on the home-first strategy.
1X has described NEO Gamma as a “Home Humanoid—your personal assistant and companion.” The robot is capable of tidying, deep cleaning, and home management, according to the company. “NEO adds a sense of order and balance to your home life that lets you focus on important things,” reads the description on the official website. The humanoid’s knit suit is soft to the touch and affords flexibility and dynamic movements. Besides, the company also claims that the robot has been designed for companionship as it brings “warmth and personality.” The NEO Gamma is capable of conversations, collaboration, and tutoring.
The Norwegian company has said that NEO Gemma is ready to step outside its lab for limited in-home testing. However, the company said that the humanoid is a long way from scaling and deployment on a commercial level. The latest robot from 1X is the latest to join the bandwagon of humanoids from Boston Dynamics, Apptronik, Agility, Figure, Tesla, Unitree, etc. What makes 1X unique is its home-first approach.
So far, home robots have not gained traction beyond robotic vacuums. This is mainly due to the technological limitations. To be effective on the home front, companies need to develop reliable, affordable, and safe. 1X’s NEO Gamma robot seems to be prioritising safety with advanced AI features that offer situational awareness, reducing risks to people and property. The company gained attention after OpenAI backed it, signalling the increasing interest in AI with a physical form. The Sam Altman-led company has since deepened its investments in humanoid technologies.
