Google has introduced a new feature in Google Drive that enhances video accessibility and navigation by providing searchable video transcripts. This feature allows users to view and search through transcripts of videos stored in Drive, making it easier to locate specific content within a video. 

Key Features:

  • Transcript Sidebar: When viewing a video in Google Drive, a transcript appears in a sidebar next to the video player. The transcript is time-stamped, and as the video plays, the currently spoken text is highlighted. 
  • Search Functionality: Users can search within the transcript to find specific keywords or phrases. Clicking on a specific block of text in the transcript will jump directly to that moment in the video. 

How to Access and Use the Feature:

  1. Ensure Captions Are Available: The video must have captions enabled. A video with captions will display a "CC" button in the bottom right corner of the video player.
  2. Generate Captions if Needed: If the video doesn't have captions, you can add them by right-clicking the video file in Drive, selecting "Manage caption tracks," and choosing "Generate automatic captions." 

  3. View the Transcript: Open the video in Google Drive, click the settings (gear) icon at the bottom right corner of the video player, and select "Transcript" to display the transcript sidebar.

Availability:

This feature is rolling out to all Google Workspace customers, Google Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts. The rollout began on February 24, 2025, and is expected to be completed by March 26, 2025. 
