Hey guys, I'm back with another interesting post! I've always been curious about AI—not on a deep technical level, but enough to stay updated with the tech behind it. Having a high-level understanding helps keep up with this ever-evolving field.

Recently, while reading a press release, I came across the term SLMs. My curiosity kicked in, so I did some quick research. Now, I'm here to share what I learned! Don't worry—I'll keep it short, simple, and easy to grasp. Let's dive in!

What are Small Language Models (SMLs)?

SLMs are AI models designed to process and generate human language. They have significantly fewer parameters than large language models (LLMs), which means they require less computational power and memory.

  • Often, SLMs are optimized for specific tasks or domains. This specialization can lead to higher accuracy and efficiency in those particular areas.
  • They can run on devices with limited resources, such as smartphones, IoT devices, and edge computing environments.

Key Advantages of SLMs

  • Reduced Costs: SLMs are less expensive to train, deploy, and maintain compared to LLMs.
  • Faster Processing: Their smaller size allows for faster processing and lower latency, making them suitable for real-time applications.
  • On-Device Capabilities: SLMs can operate locally on devices, reducing reliance on cloud computing and improving privacy.
  • Domain Specificity: They can be very accurate when they are fine tuned for very specific tasks.
  • Advancements in SLMs are allowing them to process and understand various types of data, including text, images, and audio.

SLMs (Small Language Models) are transforming smartphone AI, enabling efficiency, privacy, and powerful features. In FuntouchOS 15 on iQOO devices, these capabilities shine through:

  • Smarter Voice Assistants: The Recorder app features AI Transcript Assist, converting voice recordings into text, generating summaries, and enabling keyword-based searches.
  • Enhanced Camera & Photos: AI Erase in Albums removes unwanted objects, while Live Text lets users copy, search, and share text from images.
  • Real-Time Translations: The AI Note Assistant in the Notes app can translate text instantly.
  • Personalized AI: The Notes app also provides smart layout & summarization, optimizing user experience.
