In September 2024, Mumbai-based defense firm Sagar Defence Engineering announced a partnership with Liquid Robotics, a subsidiary of Boeing, to co-develop and co-produce Uncrewed Surface Vehicle (USV) systems. This collaboration aims to enhance undersea domain awareness and bolster maritime security for the Indian Navy, the United States, and their global partners. The initiative aligns with the US-India Defence Industrial Cooperation roadmap, supporting India's vision of self-reliance in defense (Aatmanirbharta). 

Sagar Defence, known for providing USVs to the Indian Navy, brings expertise in vehicle control systems, sensor integration, and unmanned system manufacturing. Liquid Robotics, with over 15 years of experience in designing and manufacturing USVs, contributes a broad portfolio of proven commercial and defense solutions. The partnership plans to co-produce the first set of USVs by 2025, aiming to meet global benchmarks in defense manufacturing. 

Nikunj Parashar, co-founder of Sagar Defence, emphasized that this partnership underscores the capabilities of Indian defense firms in delivering at global standards, reinforcing India's self-reliance in defense while advancing regional and global maritime security. Salil Gupte, president of Boeing India and South Asia, highlighted Boeing's commitment to supporting India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, noting that the co-development and co-production of scaled USV systems with an Indian partner demonstrate this commitment. 

This collaboration reflects a broader trend in defense technology, where advanced unmanned systems, including underwater drones, are being developed to address modern maritime challenges. These systems are intended for intelligence gathering, protecting undersea infrastructure, and countering emerging threats, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. 

By leveraging the strengths of both companies, this partnership aims to deliver cutting-edge USV systems that enhance maritime security and contribute to the strategic defense objectives of India and its allies.
