Most story-based games have their breakout star —

A character who stands out among the rest as its best in terms of character development, personality, and the part they play in the story. For some games, that star is its protagonist, whereas others might allow a side character  to shine even brighter than any of the main characters. Such is the case for Assassin's Creed Shadows, which sees one of its most unassuming characters, Junjiro, rising above the others with his charm, positivity, and youthful honesty, as well as his prominent role in the game's narrative.

The Assassin's Creed series is chock-full of interesting characters, but very rarely has one of an entry's side characters stolen the spotlight in the way that Assassin's Creed Shadows Junjiro does. While he initially appears as a kid whose heart has been stolen by one of Assassin's Creed Shadows'  dual protagonists, Naoe, it turns out that he is much more than that, as he plays an incredibly important role in shaping the relationship between the game's protagonists, on top of simply being memorable for his lovable personality.

Assassin's Creed Shadows' Junjiro Steals the Show

Junjiro's Charm, Positivity, and Youthful Honesty Set Him Apart

Apart from the role that Junjiro plays in Assassin's Creed Shadows' story, his unassuming personality and calming presence are a large part of what makes him such a lovable character in the game. Junjiro is among the warmer and more charming individuals in the game, and his troubling story only makes these traits of his more endearing. Introduced during the quest "An Unpayable Debt" in Assassin's Creed Shadows,  Junjiro is a young resident of Makinoodera Temple who helps Sorin care for Naoe after her encounter with the Shinbakufu. His artistic ability then leads him to teach Naoe the art of Sumi-e, sparking an unbreakable bond between the two of them.

A significant aspect of Junjiro's backstory is his relationship with his father, Ido Yoshihiro, a samurai and member of the Shinbakufu. Eventually, Junjiro learns that Naoe is responsible for killing his father, as he was previously unaware of his father's involvement with the Shinbakufu. However, even after learning about his father's death at the hands of Naoe, Junjiro chooses to forgive her rather than make a move for vengeance, which ultimately shows his maturity, humility, and the strength of the bond that he shares with Naoe in Assassin's Creed Shadows. 

Junjiro Plays an Integral Role in Uniting Naoe and Yasuke

Assassin's Creed Shadows' main characters are very complex, with Naoe and Yasuke , in particular, having wider character arcs than many of the series' past protagonists. Junjiro, on the other hand, is right up there with them, as he initially appears deceptively simple, perhaps due to the fact that he is a child. Child characters are often underestimated for the part they play in driving a story forward, and Junjiro is certainly a case of that. But Junjiro avoids this stereotype by being an important catalyst for growth in the relationship between Naoe and Yasuke.

Initially, Naoe and Yasuke are divided against one another by Naoe's rage, after she learns that Yasuke was involved in the raid on Iga Province, which eventually led to her father's death. This is where Junjiro comes in, as his forgiveness of Naoe for killing his father prompts her to reconsider her stance against Yasuke. Junjiro's hopeful perspective ultimately helps Naoe recognize the benefits of partnering with Yasuke against shared enemies in Assassin's Creed Shadows'  story, leading to their eventual companionship.

Junjiro may not be the face on the key art for Assassin's Creed Shadows , but his personality and role in the story leave an impression that's easy to remember long after the credits roll. Through his quiet resilience, emotional honesty, and capacity to forgive, he becomes less of a side character and more of an anchor for the game's core relationship and its themes.
