Story summary

Brotherless Night is a 2023 novel by V.V. Ganeshananthan that offers a poignant exploration of the Sri Lankan civil war through the eyes of a young woman named Sashikala "Sashi" Kulenthiren. 

Set in Jaffna in 1981, the story follows 16-year-old Sashi, who aspires to become a doctor like her grandfather. Her life takes a tragic turn when her eldest brother, Niranjan, is killed during anti-Tamil riots. This event propels her other brothers—Dayalan, Seelan, and Aran—and her close friend K into the ranks of the militant Tamil Tigers, a group fighting for a separate Tamil homeland. 

Amidst the escalating conflict, Sashi is drawn into the turmoil as she volunteers as a medic at a field hospital operated by the Tamil Tigers. This role exposes her to the brutal realities of war and forces her to confront complex moral dilemmas, particularly concerning loyalty, duty, and the human cost of political violence. 

The narrative spans from 1981 to 1989, capturing Sashi's journey as she navigates personal loss, familial bonds, and the devastating impact of civil war on her community. The novel delves into the intricacies of identity and the profound effects of conflict on individuals and families. 

Brotherless Night has been recognized for its compelling storytelling and historical depth, winning the 2024 Women's Prize for Fiction.  The novel offers readers an intimate portrayal of a family's struggle amidst the broader context of Sri Lanka's tumultuous history.
