Magnus Carlsen shatters Hikaru Nakamura’s dream to win 2025 Freestyle Chess

Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen bagged the 2025 Paris Freestyle Grand Slam title after securing a stalemate and a 1.5-0.5 match triumph against America’s Hikaru Nakamura. The world number one became the recipient of the top prize of $200,000 for his accomplishment. The runners-up, Nakamura clinched $140,000 while Italian-American Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana also got $100,000 for defeating Vincent Keymer and winning the number three spot at the event. Carlsen didn’t require a tiebreak throughout the knockout stage. He claimed victories in all matches with a time control since the quarterfinals. The Norwegian is now the leader of the Grand Slam tally with 40 points.

Talking about other players, Caruana displayed his mettle against Keymer and emerged victorious by 1.5-0.5. Following his victory in the maiden match, Caruana forced a draw in the second game, with a replicated move from a close to winning spot. With the podium finish in Paris, Caruana has advanced to the next Freestyle Chess Grand Slam, which will be held in Las Vegas in July 2025


India's Arjun Erigaisi ends his campaign in fifth spot

India’s Arjun Erigaisi vanquished Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and earned the fifth spot. The 21-year-old claimed the victory with 1.5-0.5 figures. He saw himself under pressure in the big game but succeeded in avoiding a tiebreak against the French Grandmaster. It was Arjun’s tour debut and he got a $50,000 cheque.

Russia’s Ian Nepomniachtchi grabbed the seventh place after defeating Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov, who capitulated the game in a draw position. With the end of this massive event, action will move to the United States (US), where the third leg of the Grand Slam will take place in July, following the fourth leg to be hosted by India’s capital Delhi in September. The 2025 tour will end in December in Cape Town, South Africa.
