Back in the 90s, in the small town of Malegaon, a young dreamer named Nisar Sheikh aspired to become a filmmaker. Coming from a family that owned a single-screen cinema, his passion for movies was undeniable. However, the idea of moving to Mumbai—the heart of the Indian film industry—felt like an impossible dream. Yet, giving up was never an option for him.

Determined to bring Mumbai to Malegaon, Nisar, along with his close-knit group of friends, set out to create a film for the people, by the people of his town. His goal was to craft something ‘mukkammal’—a film that would be timeless and deeply resonant. What he didn’t realize then was that his journey would be so extraordinary that it would eventually draw Mumbai’s attention back to Malegaon.

The story of Nisar Sheikh and his relentless pursuit of filmmaking inspired Tiger Baby, Excel Entertainment, and Zoya Akhtar, along with director Reema Kagti, to bring his life to the big screen. Superboys of Malegaon, a tribute to his passion and perseverance, has already received standing ovations and critical acclaim at various international film festivals. Now, the film is set for its theatrical release in India on February 28.

Superboys of Malegaon follows the journey of Nisar Sheikh (Adarsh Gourav) and his friends Shafique (Shashank Arora) and Farroq (Vineet Kumar Singh) as they embark on a mission to create a film that resonates with the audience of Malegaon. Their filmmaking adventure began with a parody of the legendary Sholay, aptly titled Malegaon Ke Sholay. Despite working with minimal resources, they relied on their passion and the cinematic knowledge they gathered from Hollywood films and behind-the-scenes footage in end credits. What started as a creative pursuit soon evolved into a dream of achieving recognition, success, and a taste of stardom in their small town. The film captures their journey of defying doubts, overcoming both personal and professional obstacles, and turning their passion into a powerful tool for transformation.

What’s Hot?

The journey of Nisar Sheikh and his friends—the ‘Superboys’ of Malegaon—is nothing short of inspiring. Their determination to break barriers and pursue their dream of filmmaking is a testament to passion and perseverance. In a world where it’s easy to blame circumstances for missed opportunities, Nisar’s story proves that dedication can overcome any obstacle.

Director Reema Kagti masterfully brings this heartwarming tale to the screen while preserving the raw authenticity of Malegaon’s setting and its real-life characters. Much like she did in Gully Boy, she once again weaves magic, capturing the essence of dreams nurtured against all odds.

The performances are a major highlight. Adarsh Gourav infuses confidence and conviction into his portrayal of Nisar Sheikh, making his journey deeply relatable. Vineet Kumar Singh, fresh off the praise for Chhaava, delivers yet another compelling act as the frustrated writer struggling for recognition. Shashank Arora, playing Nisar’s unwavering best friend, brings effortless charm to a character who believes in his abilities but struggles to express them.

Beyond the lead trio, the entire supporting cast shines with natural and effortless performances. Every character is inspired by real people, making them instantly relatable and authentic.

The dialogues are another standout. One particular line—“Writer baap hota hai”—resonates deeply, and Varun Grover’s writing elevates the film, beautifully capturing its emotional core.

The background score and music complement the film perfectly, staying true to the narrative’s tone and the world it portrays.

What’s Not?

The film covers Nisar Sheikh’s life up until 2004, but it doesn’t explore what happened in the decade that followed. A glimpse into his life post that period—how Malegaon’s filmmaking culture evolved or how it impacted him and his family—would have added another meaningful layer to the story.

Verdict

Watch Superboys of Malegaon for the pure love of cinema. It’s a moving tribute to those who dare to dream, proving that passion can turn the impossible into reality. With heartfelt performances and a soul-stirring narrative, this film is a must-watch. Stories like these don’t come to the big screen often—don’t miss the chance to celebrate the magic of Indian cinema. 🎬✹
