Key Events and Transformations:

In 1921, the building became the headquarters of the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Company.

During World War II, the tower was temporarily removed due to fears of Japanese bombing.

In 1951, the station became the headquarters of the Southern Railway after the merger of several railway companies.

Modernization and Current Status:

Chennai Central serves over 350,000 passengers daily.

In 2023, it became India's first "silent" railway station by stopping announcements to reduce noise pollution.

The station was renamed Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station, in honor of the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
