Mana Gaon Uttarakhand: THE First VILLAGE OF INDIA.

Mana Gaon, often referred to as the "First Village of India," is nestled in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, near the Indo-Tibetan border. This picturesque village holds immense historical, cultural, and mythological significance. Situated at an altitude of approximately 3,200 meters, Mana is just 3 kilometers from the revered Badrinath Temple.

Mana is the last Indian village before the Mana Pass, which leads to the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Its strategic location has historically made it a crucial point for trade and cultural exchange between India and Tibet. The village is surrounded by majestic Himalayan peaks, offering breathtaking views and a serene environment.

🕉️ Mythological Importance

Mana is steeped in Hindu mythology. It is believed that the Pandavas passed through this village during their journey to heaven, as described in the Mahabharata. Several sites in and around Mana are associated with these legends:

  • Bhim Pul: A natural rock bridge over the Saraswati River, believed to have been placed by Bhima for Draupadi to cross.

  • Vyas Gufa: A cave where sage Ved Vyasa is said to have composed the Mahabharata.

  • Ganesh Gufa: Another cave where Lord Ganesha is believed to have written the Mahabharata as dictated by Ved Vyasa.

🛕 Cultural and Religious Practices

The villagers of Mana are of Indo-Mongolian ancestry and have preserved their unique culture and traditions over the centuries. They speak the Bhotia language and follow customs that are a blend of Hindu and Tibetan Buddhist practices.

One of the significant religious events in Mana is the Pushkar Kumbh, which commenced recently. This event, held every twelve years, attracts devotees from various parts of India, including South India, who take a holy dip in the sacred waters. The Pushkar Kumbh symbolizes spiritual elevation and divine communion. The recent event was inaugurated with blessings from the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, emphasizing the village's cultural and religious unity.
