There have been two separate attempts at the Star Wars Battlefront series . The first crack at it came in the mid-2000s with the original Star Wars Battlefront and its sequel, 2005's Star Wars Battlefront 2. A third game in the series entered development but was ultimately canceled, leading to Battlefront being dormant for a full decade.

Then, in 2015, EA and DICE kicked off the second attempt at the Star Wars Battlefront series. 2015's Star Wars Battlefront received a somewhat mixed reaction, as while there was a great deal of praise for the visuals and core gameplay, many were disappointed with the game's monetization and lack of content. Two years later, EA and DICE released the highly contentious Star Wars Battlefront 2, which was criticized for its loot boxes and microtransactions. The backlash to Star Wars Battlefront 2's loot boxes was severe enough  that it caught the attention of politicians and greatly contributed to loot box laws in various countries around the world.

Despite Star Wars Battlefront 2's rocky start, the game eventually turned things around, to the point where players started a petition trying to keep the game alive in the face of EA and DICE ceasing new content updates. Now Star Wars fans have started yet another petition, but this one is not to revitalize Battlefront 2, but to convince EA and Disney to move forward with Star Wars Battlefront 3. The Change.org petition  was started by user Dan Merc and is gaining new signatures with every refresh of the page. At the time of this writing, the Star Wars Battlefront 3 petition has 1,825 signatures, but that number will likely be higher by the time this article is published.

The petition claims that there is "sky-high" demand for Star Wars Battlefront 3, and that such a game would have "limitless" potential." The petition also pointed out how much Star Wars contributed to EA's revenue this past decade. There once was a time when EA had exclusive access to the Star Wars license in the gaming space, but Disney has started to branch out since then, allowing other developers to make their own Star Wars games. Even so, EA is still working on Star Wars projects, like the third Jedi  game and the Star Wars: Zero Company strategy game, and so it's not like a Star Wars Battlefront 3 is impossible at this point.

Ultimately, Star Wars Battlefront 2 did not meet EA's sales expectations , and so that could work against a third game materializing. It's also worth pointing out that Star Wars Battlefront 2 developer DICE is currently busy with the next Battlefield game. If a Battlefront 3 ever happens, it will likely be well after DICE is done working on the new Battlefield - a game that is currently without a release date.
