With DIGIPIN, India is stepping into a new era of addressing. Hailed as a groundbreaking digital system set to revolutionise how locations are identified and services are delivered across the nation, DIGIPIN promises to make a significant leap towards the digital Indian scheme. Developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre, DIGIPIN promises unparalleled accuracy, a significant leap beyond the traditional six-digit PIN codes.
This new digital address is expected to streamline a multitude of services. From enhancing last-mile delivery for e-commerce giants like Amazon and Flipkart to significantly improving emergency response times for police, ambulances and fire services, DIGIPIN offers a level of geographical accuracy previously unavailable. It will also be invaluable in areas with unstructured or evolving addresses, ensuring that every location can be precisely identified.
No, DIGIPIN won’t replace the traditional 6-digit PIN system. Government officials have clarified that the new 10-character alphanumeric code will act as an additional layer of precision over the existing postal addresses. DIGIPIN will provide a unique, geo-coded digital identity for every property that is approximately 4 by 4 square meters on Indian land. DIGIPIN will be applicable to all properties regardless of areas – be it bustling urban centers, remotest rural areas and even maritime zones.
The Department of Posts emphasises that DIGIPIN is an open-source, interoperable and privacy-focused system. It only encodes geographic coordinates and does not store any personal data.
#️⃣– The Department of Posts has launched a dedicated portal, ‘Know Your DIGIPIN’ (dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home), where individuals can easily generate their unique code.
#️⃣- Users will need a device with GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) capability, like most modern smartphones, to pinpoint their exact location.
#️⃣– Once the location is identified, the system will automatically generate the corresponding 10-digit DIGIPIN.
