🏆South Africa has finally broken its long wait for an ICC trophy! The team won the World Test Championship (WTC) Final 2025 by defeating Australia by five wickets at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Saturday, June 14.
This is South Africa’s first ICC title in 27 years. The last time the Proteas lifted an ICC trophy was in 1998, when they won the ICC KnockOut Trophy (which was later renamed the Champions Trophy). Since then, they reached the semifinals 11 times and lost a final once—in the T20 World Cup 2024 against India.
This WTC win is very special because Test cricket is slowly losing popularity in South Africa. In 2024, the team had to send a second-string squad to New Zealand as most of their main players were busy with SA20, the domestic T20 league. But the team bounced back strong, winning eight out of their next nine Test matches.
The big credit goes to captain Temba Bavuma, who has not lost a single Test match as captain in his first 10 games. Under his leadership, South Africa showed great determination and team spirit.
This victory also makes South Africa the fourth team to defeat Australia in the final of an ICC tournament.
With this win, the Proteas have ended their title drought and given their fans a moment to celebrate in Test cricket once again!.
Happy Questing
