Known as the Eon Pokemon, Latios and Latias first appeared in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire as roaming legendaries that players could pursue after becoming the Hoenn League Champion. Both Latios and Latias are Dragon and Psychic dual types, with some core differences that set them apart. Latias is the smaller red Eon Pokemon with slightly better defenses, and Latios is the larger blue counterpart with higher attack power. Though they are not the most powerful of their kind, the distinct appearances of Latios and Latias make them both stand out among the Hoenn region's roster of Legendary Pokemon Hoenn region's roster of Legendary Pokemon.

After the arrival of Alcremie as a Ranged Support option  for novice players to try out, Pokemon Unite confirmed that two popular creatures will soon follow. As announced by Pokemon Unite on social media, Latios and Latias will arrive on Aeos Island on Monday, July 21, as part of the game's fourth anniversary festivities. Latios and Latias will join Blaziken, Sableye, Absol, Metagross, and Gardevoir on the roster of playable monsters from the Hoenn region in Pokemon Unite. However, further details about what Latios and Latias can do in Pokemon Unite matches, or what roles they will fulfill in a team composition, are unknown as of this writing. It is also unclear if Latios and Latias will be separate characters, or a two-in-one option for players to consider.

Pokemon Unite encouraged players to stay tuned for more information about the Eon Pokemon and the game's plans for its fourth anniversary event. Latios and Latias will follow Suicune, Alolan Raichu, and Alcremie on the list of playable Pokemon Unite characters added to the MOBA title since Pokemon Day in late February. Although Pokemon Unite does not have a dedicated Switch 2 version as of this writing, players will experience faster loading times, smoother menu animations, and more consistent frame rates during matches on Nintendo's record-breaking console  due to the upgraded hardware.

Though it has not seen as much success as other mobile spinoffs like Pokemon TCG Pocket or Pokemon GO, the constant changes and balance updates make Pokemon Unite worth playing in 2025 . Only time will tell what surprises The Pokemon Company and Tencent have in store for the game's fourth anniversary.
