#3 Decoding Smartphone Components | Storage | #KYP Know Your Phone

Hey Questers!

Welcome to the third post of the #KYP (Know Your Phone) series.

After talking about the brain (Processor) and short-term memory (RAM), now it’s time to decode your phone’s long-term memory — the Storage 📂

Let’s explore what it is, types, and why UFS is the game-changer!

🔍 What is Storage in a Smartphone?

Storage is the component where your apps, games, photos, videos, system files, downloads — basically, everything you save — is permanently stored.

It's also where your phone's OS lives.

Think of it like the hard drive or SSD in your PC/laptop.

🕰 A Quick History of Mobile Storage

  • eMMC (Early 2010s) – Slower, used in budget phones
  • UFS 2.0/2.1 (2016–2019) – Faster read/write
  • UFS 3.0/3.1 (2020–present) – Standard in mid-flagships
  • UFS 4.0 (2023+) – Superfast, flagship-grade, battery-efficient

🧠 What Storage Affects in Daily Use

✅ App launch speed

✅ App/game install time

✅ File transfer & sharing

✅ Camera photo/video saving

✅ System updates

✅ Multitasking with large apps

💾 Storage Capacity Tiers (2024–25)

  • 64GB: Entry-level
  • 128GB: Standard now (minimum recommended in 2025)
  • 256GB – 512GB: Ideal for heavy users & gamers
  • 1TB: Available on flagships, expensive but future-ready

❗ Always check available usable storage (system eats up 15–20GB)

📈 iQOO Example

  • iQOO Z9: UFS 2.2
  • iQOO Neo 7/Neo 9 Pro: UFS 3.1
  • iQOO 12: UFS 4.0 – top-tier performance

💡 Pro Tips:

  • For smoother experience, prefer UFS 3.1+ in 2025
  • Avoid eMMC if possible, even on budget phones
  • Regularly clear junk files to keep storage efficient
  • Use cloud backup (Google Photos, Drive) to avoid storage overload
