Rahul Todkar, VP and Head of Data & AI at Tripadvisor, believes that travel interfaces will become fully conversational and multimodal within the next three years, driven by AI and hyper-personalisation. In an interview with Indian Express, he highlighted Tripadvisor’s shift from click-based to engagement-led experiences, aiming to make trip planning more intuitive and immersive.
With 300 million monthly users, Tripadvisor is leveraging generative AI to transform how people plan travel. Its AI Trip Planner, launched 18 months ago, has created over 2.5 million itineraries, with users showing 3–5x more engagement and higher spending.
Tripadvisor’s AI strategy spans product innovation, marketing, internal productivity, and external partnerships—with OpenAI, Perplexity, Microsoft, and Alexa. Todkar emphasized three key AI trends: conversational UIs, multimodal content, and personalisation.
The company’s Snowflake partnership has modernised its data infrastructure, managing over 10 petabytes and enabling faster, cost-efficient AI deployment. Todkar noted a 20–30% improvement in development speed and a significant drop in storage costs.
As Todkar puts it, “Travel UI will no longer be about filters and lists—it’ll be a smart, social, and seamless conversation.”
