Your Child Can Also Make UPI Payments: Here’s How UPI Circle Works for Kids

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) recently introduced a new feature called UPI for Minors through a system known as UPI Circle. This aims to bring digital payments to children under the age of 18 in a safe and controlled way.

🔹 What is UPI Circle?

UPI Circle is a new feature that allows minors aged 10 to 18 years to use UPI for making digital payments. It creates a controlled and restricted payment environment, giving parents or guardians control while enabling children to learn digital financial literacy early.

🔹 Key Features of UPI Circle for Kids:

1. Limited Access

Kids can send and receive money, scan QR codes, and make online purchases, but with pre-set limits and parental controls.

2. Parental Consent Required

A parent or guardian must open a minor account in a bank that supports UPI for minors and authorize the UPI access.

3.Spending Limits

There are daily transaction limits (example: ₹2,000 per day), which can be managed by parents.

4.No Credit or Overdraft

Only debit transactions are allowed. That means kids can spend only what is available in the linked account.

5.Educational Value

Encourages financial responsibility, digital literacy, and budgeting skills from a young age.

🔹 How to Set It Up:

1. Open a Minor Bank Account

Parents must visit a bank offering UPI Circle and open a minor savings account.

2. KYC and Parental Control

Basic KYC is done, and parents approve the account's UPI usage and set limits.

3. Link to UPI App

The child can then use a UPI-enabled app (like BHIM or bank-specific apps) with limited permissions.

4. Monitor Transactions

Parents can track all transactions and adjust controls anytime.

🔹 Why It’s Useful:

• Safe introduction to digital money

• Prepares kids for a cashless world

• Promotes budgeting habits

• Keeps spending in check

🔹 Banks & Apps Supporting It

As of now, only selected banks and UPI apps support this feature. More banks are expected to roll it out soon. It's advisable to check with your bank for availability.
