OpenAI clarified it has no active plans to use Google’s in-house TPUs widely, despite early testing. While it relies on Nvidia and AMD chips, OpenAI is also developing its own AI chip, aiming to reach the “tape-out” design milestone this year.

Though it recently signed up for Google Cloud services, most of its computing needs are met by CoreWeave’s GPU servers. Google has been pushing its TPUs to more external clients, including Apple and OpenAI rivals like Anthropic.
