🎬 Thread: Maharani (Season 1–3) – A Gritty Political Saga Rooted in Bihar’s Soil

A review from a Bihari film critic's heart, blending emotion, politics & storytelling 🧵

1️⃣ MAHARANI – AN OVERVIEW

Set in the 1990s, Maharani is a gripping political drama inspired loosely by Bihar’s political history — particularly Lalu Prasad Yadav appointing his wife Rabri Devi as CM.

The story revolves around Rani Bharti (played powerfully by Huma Qureshi), a homemaker suddenly thrust into the CM's chair.

2️⃣ SEASON 1 – “The Rise of the Accidental Queen"

🎭 Performance:  Huma Qureshi surprises us with her raw, rooted portrayal of a rural woman learning politics like a battlefield.

🧠 Writing: Seamlessly weaves caste dynamics, corruption, and real-life inspired events like the Laxmanpur Bathe massacre.

📽️ Direction: Subtle yet impactful — Karan Sharma keeps the tone grounded and intense.

🔍 Critique:  Some dramatizations feel forced, and dialogues sometimes lack regional flavor.

📌 Verdict: A solid opener with a strong emotional arc and powerful subtext about gender and class.

3️⃣ SEASON 2 – “The Lioness Fights Back”

🔥 Plot: Rani Bharti is no longer naive. She battles betrayal, a crumbling system, and her own people.

🎭 Acting: Huma now brings a fiercer energy. Sohum Shah as Bheema Bharti grows darker, echoing real-life political downfalls.

⚖️ Themes: Criminal-politician nexus, media trials, caste-based manipulation – all echo Bihar’s real political history.

🎬 Cinematography: Gritty streets, dark rooms, political rallies – well-framed to reflect Bihar’s atmosphere.

📌 Verdict: Emotionally heavy, politically sharp, and cinematically improved.

4️⃣ SEASON 3 – “Rani vs The System”

🚨 Narrative: Now a seasoned politician, Rani faces internal conspiracies, legal traps, and media trials.

💥 Drama: This season gets faster-paced, higher stakes. A few courtroom sequences steal the show.

🔁 Twists: More fictionalized than the earlier seasons, but still manages to keep roots intact.

🎭 Supporting Cast: Amit Sial and Kani Kusruti are standout additions.

📌 Verdict: A thrilling conclusion. Political drama meets emotional depth with a layered female lead.

5️⃣ AS A BIHARI VIEWER…

💬 Dialect & Tone: Could’ve used more authentic Bhojpuri/Maithili/Magahi tones in dialogues.

🌾 Representation: Finally, a show that doesn’t show Bihar only through crime — but through power, people & resilience.

🧠 Impact: Rani Bharti becomes a symbol of rural intellect rising above systemic patriarchy.

🔴IMPORTANT THING YOU ALL SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS🔴

Maharani is a political drama web series streaming on SonyLIV.

It stars Huma Qureshi as Rani Bharti, a homemaker who unexpectedly becomes the Chief Minister of Bihar.

The series is not a true story, but it is **inspired by real political events** from the 1990s.

Many viewers feel it resembles the real-life story of Rabri Devi, wife of Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Rabri Devi was also an uneducated housewife who became CM after Lalu was forced to step down.

Rani Bharti’s character clearly echoes this background.

However, the makers of Maharani have denied that it is a biopic.

They say it is a fictional story, loosely based on the political climate of the time.

The character of Bheema Bharti in the show also reminds people of Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Despite similarities, Maharani is not officially based on Lalu or Rabri.

It mixes real events and fictional characters for drama.

So, it is inspired by reality, but not a direct retelling of any one person’s life.

In short: It’s fiction, not a biography—but with a strong flavo

r of Bihar politics.

FINAL RATING & ANALYSIS

⭐ Rating: 8.5/10

🎯 Why Watch?

* Realistic portrayal of 90s politics

* Strong female lead with growth arc

* Inspired by real-life political moves

* Captures the essence of Bihar beyond clichés

🧵 This series deserves more attention — not just as a political drama, but as a story of transformation, resistance, and identity.

Would I recommend it?

Yes — to every Indian who wants to understand the roots of modern-day politics and to every Bihari who wants to see a version of their history onscreen.
