To mark the 50th anniversary of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), the Banque de la République du Burundi has released a record-breaking commemorative banknote with a denomination of 10,000 Francs.

Measuring an astonishing 400 mm by 288 mm, it has earned the title of the world's largest banknote, with a limited issue of only 1,000 pieces.


Obverse Design – A Tribute to African Megafauna

The front side of the note is a stunning showcase of Africa's iconic wildlife. It features a powerful composition of African megafaun, including the world's largest land mammals—many of which are under protection by CITES. The imagery underscores the significance of conservation efforts and the urgent need to protect endangered species.

Reverse Design – A Cultural and Geographic Celebration of Burundi

The reverse side highlights the beauty and identity of Burundi, incorporating national symbols and heritage. It displays the State House, national flag, and coat of arms, along with a map of Burundi pointing to the source of the Nile River. The design is further enriched with depictions of traditional Burundian drummers and dancers, celebrating the country's rich cultural legacy.
