What is Aircela?

Founded in 2019 in New York by Mia and Eric Dahlgren, Aircela is a cleantech startup that aims to revolutionize the way we think about carbon emissions and fuel. Their groundbreaking technology captures CO₂ from the atmosphere and converts it into fossil-free, drop-in gasoline using only air, water, and renewable electricity.


How Does It Work?

Aircela's system is designed to be compact and efficient, roughly the size of a household refrigerator. Here's how it functions:

  1. Direct Air Capture (DAC): Ambient air is drawn into the unit, and CO₂ is chemically captured using a potassium hydroxide solution.  
  2. Hydrogen Production: Water undergoes electrolysis, powered by renewable electricity, to generate hydrogen.
  3. Fuel Synthesis: The captured CO₂ and hydrogen are first combined to create methanol. This methanol is then processed through a methanol-to-gasoline catalyst to produce high-quality, engine-ready gasoline.


Each unit can capture approximately 10 kg of CO₂ and produce about 1 gallon of clean gasoline per day.

Why It Matters

Aircela's innovation has the potential to disrupt traditional fuel industries by offering a cleaner, decentralized alternative. Here's why this matters:

  • In February 2023, they received strategic investment from Maersk Growth to pilot green methanol server farms.
  • In May 2025, Aircela publicly unveiled its first working machine in New York City, marking a major step toward commercial deployment.
