After a delightful exploration of Coorg in the company of @SahilJadhavlast week, this week, We are excited to explore the attractions of Raigad Fort.

Raigad Fort, located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, India, holds great historical significance as it was the capital of the Maratha Empire under the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

How to Reach:

By Air:

• The nearest airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (Mumbai).
• From the airport, hire a taxi or use public transportation to reach Raigad.

By Train:

• The nearest railway station is Pune or Panvel.
• From Pune or Panvel, you can hire a cab or take a bus to reach Raigad.

By Road:

• Well-connected by roads from major cities in Maharashtra.
• State transport buses and private cabs are available.
• Self-driving is an option with scenic routes.

By Ropeway:

• An adventurous option to reach the fort.
• Ropeway starts from Pachad and takes you to the fort in about 20 minutes.

History of Raigad:

Construction by Chandrarao More:

• The fort was initially constructed by Chandrarao More, a disciple of Chhatrapati Shivaji's father, Shahaji, in 1030.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's Coronation:

• The fort gained prominence during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In 1674, Shivaji was crowned here and took the title of "Chhatrapati," marking the establishment of the Maratha Empire.

Strategic Location:

• Raigad Fort is situated at an altitude of approximately 820 meters (2,700 feet) above sea level on the Sahyadri mountain range. Its strategic location provided a natural defense advantage.

Fortifications and Architecture:

• The fort is known for its robust fortifications, including large walls, bastions, and gates.
• The Maha Darwaja (Main Gate) is a prominent entrance with impressive architecture.

Balekilla:

• The central part of the fort, known as Balekilla, housed the main residential and administrative buildings.

Execution Point:

• The fort has a significant historical spot known as the "Takmak Tok," where Shivaji Maharaj is said to have dispensed justice, including capital punishment.

Raigad's Importance in Maratha History:

• Raigad served as the capital of the Maratha Empire for over 26 years, playing a crucial role in shaping the destiny of the Maratha kingdom.

Fall of Raigad:

• After Chhatrapati Shivaji's death in 1680, his son Chhatrapati Sambhaji ruled the Maratha Empire. However, the fort faced several attacks and was eventually captured by the Mughals in 1689.

British Occupation:

• Raigad Fort witnessed battles during the Anglo-Maratha Wars in the 18th century. The British gained control of the fort in 1818.
